Crew Profile

Captain Name :
Gregory Pogan
Number of Crew:
2
Nationality/ies:
USA
Language/s:
ENGLISH

Captain Gregory Pogan grew up with a love of the water. From childhood his family owned a boat, and summer vacations were spent at Lake Cumberland, KY. At the tender age of five years old “Pogan” as he likes to be called, learned to help his dad steer the family pontoon boat.

Pogan first visited St Thomas in the summer of 1998, to witness a wedding. Falling in love with the islands, he did not waste any time, and moved to St Thomas in the fall of 1998. Originally from Ohio, Pogan studied Management and Marketing at Ashland University, but after working on land in St Thomas for two years, he realized that his passion was for boating and the sea. Pogan earned his USCG 100 Ton Captain’s License in 2001, and quickly set about trading his 9 to 5 job for a life of freedom and adventure on the sea.

Captain Pogan has spent the last 15 years exploring the waters of the Virgin Islands as a charter captain and rescue diver. Pogan loves nothing more than to be out on the water, with visitors and locals alike, sharing the beautiful sights, abundant nature, and amazing stories he has collected over the years about our local Caribbean islands. Laid back, professional, and knowledgeable are some terms frequently used to describe his personality. Captain Pogan looks forward to helping the guests have experiences and create memories that they will treasure for a lifetime!

Your First Mate, Sadie Cowley, will greet you warmly aboard the Sailing Yacht Sirena with a chilled cocktail, warmed towel and brilliant smile. She will assist you putting away your luggage before you and your group set sail into the Caribbean waters.

Sadie, while not born in St. Thomas has lived on island since she was five. She began working with her father as a boat builder and quickly fell in love with everything the ocean has to offer. Her mother is a jewelry designer and her work showcases the Caribbean lifestyle.

She spent several years working in the back of the house of restaurants and catering companies, honing her culinary skills. She has an innate skill in creating delicious and healthy dishes aboard S/Y Sirena as well as a talent for concocting smooth, tasty drinks for all aboard!

With her Merchant Mariner credentials in hand, she set sail on the waters of the Caribbean to show her guests all the beauty of the tropical waters. Her experience in the Virgin Islands gives her the ability to guide guests into lesser known places that boast quiet opulence of beaches and snorkeling spots. She knows many of the honey-holes filled with tropical fish along with some of the turtles and sting rays favorite dining spots. She will show you some of the most beautiful under sea life the waters have to offer.

You’ll certainly enjoy your time aboard with Sadie as her personality and humor with captivate you while aboard, her deliciously prepared meals will make for your perfect vacation.

How would you qualify skipper:
When it came to getting the boat point a to point b he got us there safely and efficiently. It is important to note that the second to last day we had an AMAZING sail that was all of our highlight. He knew his way and was an obvious professional. However, you could not ask any questions for fear of being mocked. He was famous in our group for saying "sometimes helping is not helping". He was sick for most of the charter and was hoping for a recovery but it was obvious he was not feeling well.

3

How would you qualify rest of the crew:
She was efficient and helpful to the captain. She was professional in dinging us to shore and giving advice on activities. However, she was condescending and curt to our group. She was abrasive when giving orders and answering questions. On tip day this all changed and they both become so very pleasant and accommodating.

4

How would you qualify the yacht (comfort, features, general maintenance, etc):
The boat was clean and fit our group nicely. It had AC which we used every night, it was awesome.

5

How would you qualify the itinerary:
This is the area where twilight rodeo excelled. Even if it was not their first pick, we went where we asked to go and stayed and left as we pleased.

5

How would you qualify the sports and leisure activities/equipment on board:
Relaxing on the trampoline at the front, Snorkeling, and Swimming were all amazing!

5

How would you qualify the food and drinks:
The food was good. Jody provided us with three yummy meals a day. It was more food they we could have dreamed of! It was not fine dining but we all enjoyed our meals together sitting outside enjoying the beauty the BVIs have to offer. We had every drink we could have needed, such a luxury.

3

How would you qualify the entire experience of your trip:
We as a group had a great time however, we could not figure out what we had done to the crew to make them so curt and blatantly rude. We felt uncomfortable many times. We agreed we must have offended them but, we asked and never determined a source of the problem. We had an amazing trip and it was something we will talk about for years to come but, we would not rebook twilight rodeo.

How would you qualify skipper:
Paul was sick. He did what we asked but no more…no comments, no conversation, no information….totally withdrawn

2

How would you qualify rest of the crew:
Yacht was an exceptional cook. meals amazing. BUT…NO friendliness, curt, offering no conversation other than what was necessary.

4

How would you qualify the yacht (comfort, features, general maintenance, etc):
yacht was good

How would you qualify the food and drinks:
excellent

How would you qualify the entire experience of your trip:
Rated a two. The commentary and description of the staff were wrong on the website. We asked them about snorkeling, a venue the website claimed they excelled in .. Answers: "No I will get you a book if you want to identify fish. " not the answers given online on how they loved to get in the water and identify fish. They were cold. We kept thinking maybe we had done something wrong. My 30 year old friendly son was so upset he finally asked the captain and he said no. We said thank you at every turn, took them to dinner off the boat with out a word of conversation that we did not ask the question. It was weird. if we offered to help with the sailing or docking we were cut off…they seemed kind to others they met…we just could not figure it out. We killed them with kindness but they were the coldest two people we have ever met. NEVER would we go with them again or recommend anyone else….Efficient but cold is the summary. We finally decided he must be dying and they are devastated. You do not need them at Ritzy Charters unless they are kinder. We are the four easiest going individuals. We even offered to take a day off and take paul to a dr. they said no just a mosquito borne disease. our biggest disappointment….reviews were false. they were not friendly at all!!!
